The proposed project will focus on aspects of water, sanitation and hygiene promotion (WASH) during the anticipation period and target vulnerable population groups in identified priority districts of Rubavu and Musanze. Safe drinking water, clean sanitation facilities, and good hygiene practice are essential for Ebola patient treatment and preventing the transmission of Ebola (and other infectious diseases) in health care facilities, treatment centres, households, and communities. Long -term, sustainable public health and WASH infrastructure and education are key to prepare communities, particularly in Rwanda, and prevent future outbreaks of Ebola and other diseases. In this framework, the proposed project plans to target two main population groups who have already been identified in the National EVD Contingency plan as people at risk of contamination or spreading the disease. These are the traders who are moving between the two countries as well as community health workers committees (HWCs) at the sector level. Non Food Items (NFIs) kits will contain: 1 blanket, 10 sheets of metal, 2 kg galvanised wire, 1 cooking set, 1 cooking stove, 1 mattress. 2.Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Interventions: Preposition of WASH items due to the high risk of contamination to water sources which would lead to a further crisis, including the spread of water -borne diseases. This intervention will minimise the public health risks and will facilitate victims' access to clean drinking water, basic hygiene and sanitation. WASH kits include: 1 bucket/ basin, 1 jerry can, 1 packet soap, 1 handwashing kit. 3.Early warning awareness: This includes early warning messaging and awareness campaign particularly in high risk areas (at risk population in rural/ isolated communities focusing more on the most vulnerable population of concern including women, youth, children and people with disabilities) to compliment messaging through Radio, TV, and newsletters and social media by Rwanda Meteorology Agency; awareness campaign on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) (targeting more on women and youth as change agents in DRR). One part of the loan will serve as working capital while the other part will be a long -term loan; 5 years for purchasing a packaging machine. The grant part will support on organising and strengthening the organic fresh pineapple chain. This includes training of farmers on organic farming , providing farming materials to farmers, constructing collection centres for reducing harvest losses due to high perishability.
